What to Expect From an Orthodontic Evaluation
TOWARDS A HEALTHIER, WELL-ALIGNED SMILE
An orthodontic evaluation at Basin Meadows Dental is a thorough assessment of your oral health, so your provider can determine the best treatment plan. During your evaluation, Dr. Anissi will:
- Look at tooth position to identify crowding, spacing, or other aesthetic concerns
- Evaluate the bite (how the upper and lower teeth come together) to detect an underbite, overbite, or crossbite
- Assess jaw structure for any problems that may affect oral health or facial aesthetics
- Look into your airway passages and overall airway health, as certain orthodontic conditions can affect proper breathing, causing health-related problems
Phases of Orthodontic Care
TAILORED EVALUATIONS & TREATMENTS FOR EVERY AGE
Orthodontic treatment is often described as two main phases related to a patient’s developmental stage:
Phase I: Mixed Dentition in Children
This phase is for younger patients who still have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. Early intervention guides proper jaw growth and prevents serious issues later on. We work with each child’s natural growth pattern to correct or improve orthodontic problems.
Orthodontic evaluations for children include both a bite and an airway assessment. This is so Dr. Anissi can determine a child’s likely future dental needs and start treatment early to help them avoid the need for expensive treatments later in life.
Phase II: Adult Dentition
This phase relates to adolescents and adults with all of their permanent teeth. These orthodontic treatments aim to fix any alignment issues and improve oral function. When we undertake an orthodontic evaluation, we look at airway health, especially if previous concerns were noted, as well as the bite to detect malocclusion affecting chewing, speech, or overall oral health.
Interceptive Orthodontics
EARLY INTERVENTION FOR KIDS
Interceptive orthodontics, also known as early orthodontic treatment, aims to identify and treat potential dental problems before they fully develop. By intervening at an early stage, we can encourage the correct growth of the jaws and incoming permanent teeth. This proactive approach works alongside your child’s natural development, helping them avoid the need for more complex orthodontic and dental treatments in the future.
Space Maintainers
SAVES SPACE FOR GROWING TEETH
When a child loses a baby tooth prematurely, the surrounding teeth may shift into the empty space, leading to alignment problems. Space maintainers are custom-made appliances that hold the space open, ensuring that permanent teeth have the proper room to emerge correctly. This preventive measure helps maintain correct dental alignment. It also reduces the child’s likelihood of needing complex orthodontic treatments later.
Palatal Expander
CREATING ROOM FOR PROPER DEVELOPMENT
A palatal expander is an orthodontic device we use to widen narrow upper jaws and create necessary room for proper tooth movement. Palatal expanders are especially useful in treating crossbites and overcrowding. They can also benefit sleep apnea sufferers as they expand the airway, thereby improving breathing during sleep. Both children and adults can benefit from this treatment, depending on their specific orthodontic needs.
Straight Wire Braces
TRADITIONAL BRACES FOR EFFECTIVE ALIGNMENT
Straight wire braces are conventional metal braces that correct misaligned teeth and bites. They consist of brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by archwires, which gently shift the teeth into the right positions. This traditional, proven method is highly effective in treating a wide range of orthodontic issues, whether you need some minor adjustments or more complex treatments.
Clear Aligners
DISCREET AND CONVENIENT ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT
For patients seeking a less noticeable orthodontic option, clear aligners offer an excellent alternative. These custom-made, transparent trays gradually shift your teeth into alignment without the need for metal brackets or wires. Clear aligners are removable as well. This makes them a preferred choice by many because it’s easier to eat and take care of your oral hygiene. Clear aligners are very popular among adults and teens who prefer a discreet treatment option.
Retainers
MAINTAINING YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE
After orthodontic treatment, it's essential to wear a retainer to keep your new teeth in position. Basin Meadows Dental’s custom-made retainers will ensure your new smile stays in place in the long term.
